Why Fall Flowers Look Different — and Better
Spring flowers tend toward pastel and delicate. Fall flowers are built differently. Cooler nights slow growth just enough to concentrate colour and thicken petals, which is why a fall dahlia holds its shape in a vase far longer than a spring ranunculus. The palette shifts too — rust, burgundy, mustard, plum — tones that spring simply doesn't produce naturally.

Dahlias
The showstopper of the season. Dahlias bloom from midsummer right through the first frost, and by September they're at their most dramatic — dinner-plate-sized blooms in wine reds, burnt orange, and soft coral. They're a favourite for anyone who wants an arrangement with real presence on a table.
Chrysanthemums
Mums get a bad reputation as a grocery-store afterthought, but a well-grown chrysanthemum is one of the longest-lasting cut flowers available — often two to three weeks in a vase. Spider mums and football mums in particular bring texture that most other flowers can't match.
Amaranthus
Trailing, deep burgundy, almost dramatic in how it moves — amaranthus is what gives a lot of fall arrangements their "editorial" look. It pairs beautifully with dahlias and adds movement to an otherwise structured bouquet.
Sunflowers (Still Going)
Sunflowers aren't just a summer flower in Ottawa — the later varieties run right into October, and the smaller-headed cultivars actually work better in mixed arrangements than the giant single-stem versions people picture.
Ranunculus and Garden Roses in Deeper Tones
Fall growers shift these into terracotta, wine, and caramel shades instead of the pastels you'd see in spring — same elegant flower, completely different mood.
What to Order for Thanksgiving
Canadian Thanksgiving falls in mid-October, and it's one of the few holidays where the table itself is the centrepiece. A few notes if you're ordering for the day:
- Low and long beats tall. Guests need to see each other across the table — a low, textured arrangement with dahlias, mums, and trailing amaranthus works better than a tall vase.
- Warm tones over bright ones. Rust, cream, and deep orange read as "autumn" in a way that bright red or pink doesn't.
- Order a few days ahead. Thanksgiving week is one of our busiest — same-day delivery is available, but a standing order a few days out guarantees you get first pick of the season's best dahlias.
